Teachers
Integrating careers education into your teaching helps students understand the real-world relevance of what they are learning. When they see how your subject connects to future jobs and opportunities, it can boost their motivation, engagement, and confidence in making informed decisions about their next steps. It does not require additional lessons or major changes—just small, meaningful links within your existing teaching. By highlighting the purpose behind the learning, you not only deepen students’ understanding of your subject, but also play a key role in preparing them for life beyond school. There are lots of simple, practical ways to do this, and we have included some resources and links below to help you bring the world of careers into your subject area and lessons. You can also see what we are already doing in school around careers education here:
Ways you can embed careers into your subject:
- Use Real-World Examples - Link lesson content to how it is used in real jobs. For example, talk about how percentages are used in finance or how science is applied in healthcare or engineering.
- Highlight Transferable Skills - Help students identify and develop skills like problem-solving, communication, teamwork, and critical thinking—and link these to a wide range of careers.
- Include Career Spotlights - Dedicate a few minutes of a lesson to highlight a career related to your subject, using videos, short case studies, or job profiles.
- Invite Guest Speakers - Where possible, invite professionals (in person or virtually) to speak to students about how they use subject knowledge in their careers.
- Make Links Explicit - Regularly point out how the topic being taught could be relevant to a range of job sectors or career pathways—not just the obvious ones.
- Display Career Pathways/Skills - Have visual displays in your classroom showing the different careers linked to your subject, with information about required qualifications and skills.
- Connect with Alumni - Share stories or case studies from former students who have gone into different careers using your subject as a foundation.
- Support Employer Encounters - Support meaningful employer encounters—either by preparing students beforehand or linking the experience back to classroom learning.
- Link to Labour Market Information - Use local and national labour market info to show students where opportunities are growing and how your subject connects to those areas.
- Share your own careers story – Share your careers journey with students, highlighting study pathways and transferable skills.
